I discovered another alternative while playing around with it myself. This technique only works on the main Facebook site, not on the mobile version.
When updating a status, enter the AT symbol, then start typing the person's name. Type as much of it as you need to identify the person. For instance, say you're tagging me, but you're also friends with someone named Michelle McDonald. Type @Michelle McQ, then hit tab. Return to the "what's on your mind" field, either by exiting forms mode or by hitting shift tab. The name of the tagged person should be there, and you can simply continue typing your update.
