That should work but if it doesn't then you can try either of the following:
In windows explorer highlight the drive, hit the applications key and select eject or something like that. I'm not sure exactly of the phrasing as currently I'm not on a system with an external hard drive. The other option would simply be shut off your system and then disconnect the drive.
