Hello List, I wanted to take a minute to explain the problem which several customers ran into after upgrading to the December update of JAWS 14. For those of you who experienced the issue, it showed itself in a few different ways but for most, trying to read the JAWS UI, or JAWS generated lists like the system tray, links, and so on, would fail to read after installing the update. We were able to get a computer from a local customer that had the issue, was willing to work with us and lend us his computer so we could determine what was happening. As luck would have it, a list member many of you know, Nancy Feldman also had the problem on her laptop and she was in town attending a scripting class here at Freedom Scientific. Using her computer, the developers were able to verify the problem they discovered and confirm a solution. As it turned out, the problem involved a braille driver which has been modified to resolve something for Windows 8 support but could impact computers regardless of them using Braille.
We are in the process now of getting the instructions written and tested, to send out to people this afternoon, who had experienced this issue. If you are one of those people that experienced the issue since the update posted yesterday, and you have not communicated yet with our support department, please do so now or drop me an email directly (send it to edam...@freedomscientific.com) and I will make sure we get in touch with you over the weekend, if not tonight. If you did not have the problem, you are OK to continue using the update. Early next week, we will repost a new JAWS 14 update with the change necessary and turn the auto update back on once that is complete. Again, thank you for your support with JAWS and all of our products. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused those of you who had the issue. Have a good weekend. When I told it to live in the Task Tray, and then hit Insert-J to bring up the JAWS menu, my arrow keys wouldn't work in that menu. I'd press an arrow and nothing would happen. I could force an option to be clicked by dragging the JAWS cursor around, but then once I got into the dialog boxes, such as for Basic Settings or Speech settings, JAWS took several seconds to respond to the press of the Tab key, and didn't announce the options I tabbed to if I moved at all. I did verify that it behaves the same way even if it doesn't stay in the task tray. I've gone back to JAWS 13. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Janie Degenshein Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2012 2:51 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 December Update is now available same here as well Keep Smiling, Janie Degenshein "Happiness isn't having what you want, but wanting what you already have" Access Tech Consultant Facilitator of ECHO (Eyes Closed Hearts Open) President, National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey Senior Division Co-host of OTBS On The Bright Side www.thruoureyes.org/brightside.html jdege...@comcast.net -----Original Message----- From: Geovanni Bahena Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2012 4:41 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 December Update is now available Hmm. When I updated it killed my insert key. I had to use narrator to kill it in the task manager. So I downloaded it from the web site, un installed and then reinstalled jaws 14. Now when it came up it was playing nice. Until I told it to start up at log in and all sessions. Then I lost my insert key when it rebooted. Now back on jaws 13 because 14 has no insert key and really comes up strange.
