Brian, these steps are detailed but I cannot do the final okay step to make the settings stick. Therefore, I understand that if I change from html to plain text that replies and forwards will automatically go out in black, then this seems to be the easiest solution. Is there any reason I should not change to plain text? Where do I go and how do I make this change? Thank you very much for all help.

Tab to the list of colors and use the down arrow key to make your choice. You can also use down arrow key until the "more colors" button is selected and press spacebar if the color you want to use is not in the list. I have tried many approaches and have not been able to fix this problem yet. I have determined that if I start a new message, it goes out in black.
