If your using windows 7,
1, after you've booted the computer,
Wait a little bit for desktop to load.
2, now press,
Windows+r=run,
Type in:
sndvol
Press enter,
Tab once, press the spacebar,
This should unmute the sound.
If you wish to put a shortcut to:
Sndvol.exe, on your desktop try the following;
1, go to desktop,
Windows key+m,
2, press the keystroke,
Ctrl+spacebar,
To unselect all icons.
3, press the applications key, and down arrow and enter on, New sub
menu.
4, now arrow and enter on,
New shortcut.
5,
Now type the following in the edit box,
sndvol.exe
6, tab next, press enter.
You will see/hear;
sndvol.exe
your asked to give the shortcut a name, you can leave the sndvol.exe,
or you
could name it for example; volume.
Tab finish press enter.
Now, if you would like a hot-key,
1, desktop,
Press the letter "s" until you hear,
Sndvol.exe
Or the letter "v" if you've named the shortcut volume,
2, now press alt+enter to bring up the properties,
3, tab until you hear;
Shortcut key none,
Here you could type s, or what ever letter you wish, Now press enter.
Now you have a shortcut with a hot-key.

That's the mute speakers button, by pressing the tab key once. The
Mute
System Sounds button is four tab further on than that, so you'd press
the tab key five times to get to it.
An easier command to type, is: from the Start (search box edit);
sndvol
.
(You may remember sndvol32.exe on older Windows 32-bit systems.) You
get
straight to the dialogue box, typing less, that way.

I am just using a vanilla USB Hp desktop keyboard. I have muted
twice
and
rebooting the first time did not undue the deed. I had to get my
husband to
unmute with the mouse.
So, if I have not invoked mute with the JAWS key spacebar s sequence
then
using that will not unmute? Does that key combo just mute JAWS and
not
system sounds?
I am afraid of muting again and not being able to undo it
independently if I
am the only one at home at the time.

That's fine for JAWS itself, but when the computer is sound-muted
JAWS
will be silent anyway.
Joni, what model and make of keyboard are you using? is it a
laptop -
with an Fn key? Or with a Bluetooth keyboard? Maybe you're using the
F3
key, with Fn mode enabled? (I know that On some keyboards, when the
Fn
mode is on the F4 key can do different things depending on
proprietary
stuff, wireless, or what-not.)
