Would it be possible to record a four-track tape with Audacity, wihich is
free? If the old cable that conected old tape recorders doesn't work, I
wonder if I could do the recording without conecting the recorder to the
computer. Like in the old days when those cables were not around.
I was also thinking about using a digital recorder and then transfering the
content to the computer form there, but is it posible to do the four-track?
I am new to all of this, so that is why I need detailed information.

Lots of questions.
First off, see if you can find a USB to audio adaptor. I've seen a couple
that use the 3.5 m.m. (1/8 inch) connector, but I haven't seen one that uses
the same RCA phono connectors that were used on old tape decks. You might
need an adaptor cable as well.
Yes, using Goldwave you could record each side of the tape to digital, then
cut/copy the left track or right track to a new sound file. If you don't
have "crosstalk" between the channels, this will work fine. Same thing goes
for Library of Congress format tapes, which are at half normal cassette
speed; just record them into Goldwave, select the Pitch option from the
Effects menu, then select (down one octave) to normalize the speed.
A larger problem I have had with interfaces is that they fight over the ACEO
drivers with JAWS, and JAWS usually loses. So, you might find yourself
without speech.
I don't know if any of this helps; I bought a $79.00 cheap
"direct-to-digital" tape player that connects directly into a USB port.

Using Windows 8-64 lastest Jaws 16.
I would like to to digitalize my tapes, that is transfer thier content to
my computer.
I have got the windows sound recorder, but you can’t use it for long
recording. I know some one wrote stepts to stretch time, but isn’t there
another accessible recording software that would work?
My laptop has only one conection for headphones, and not for microphone.
As fas I I understand I would have to conect myy tape recorder to a
microphone conection. How would I do this? I beleive I would have to
change the headphone to microphone in control panel, but I don’t know how
to do this.
Lastly, a lot of my tapes are recorded in a four-track tape recorder which
has broken down. I believe it is possible to record this tapes using an
ordinary tape recorder and making the proper edition to four tracks once
the content in in the computer. How can this be done?
