Hi Mike, I tried the things you have suggested with no luck. The mark as unread option is unavailable in the edit menu. I imagine so because the message is already unread. I'm thinking that it must be some display problem keeping jaws from reading the read/ unread status. Any ideas?

Or, From the message list press, ctrl+shift+O, for the Options tabs press, ctrl+tab to get into the Read Tab, uncheck the 'mark message as read after displaying for' checkbox by pressing spacebar, tab to okay & press enter to save & close options.
