Could one just hit the Window Key and then type in Disk Clean Up, and it
take you there? I mean, if that is possible, why not do it the easy way, I
just don't know if that is possible.

Best from,

Carolyn

HI Jim,

I'm afraid this isn't correct.

If you press alt+enter on the This PC icon, this will bring up the system
properties, in which case, you have to tab to system tools, press enter,
then tab to disk clean up, where you can choose which drive you wish to run
the disk clean up wizard on.

An easier way of accomplishing this task is to open up This PC, then arrow
to the drive you wish to run a disk clean up on, and press alt+enter. This
will bring up the drive's properties, then tabbing to the disk clean up
button, you can press the spacebar, and the wizard will automatically scan
your drive for unnecessary files to be deleted.

I can't remember if it will delete cookies and the like, as I think you'll
have to go into Internet Options for that, but at least you'll be able to
delete temporary internet files and Windows temp files and such like.

I should also point out that when you have the drive's properties opened, a
press of control+tab will take you to the tools page of the drive where you
can run a scan disk, a defrag and a back-up, depending on your preference.

Good luck.

Scorpio

Go to this PC. Then, select your C drive, and hit, alt enter, and tab twice.
You should hear disk clean up. Then, hit enter, and it will take a few
minutes, and then, present you, with choices to clean up or not. Check the
ones you want to be cleaned, and tab over to ok. Jim

Hi Carolyn,

I do believe that half of your statement is true, though I'm not sure if you
should quote me on that.

The Defragmentation service is true, as Windows 10 keeps your hard drive
defragged constantly so as to maximize the storage space and it's
information retrieval.

In terms of the Disk clean up, I don't believe this has been automated in
Windows 10, but as of Windows 8.1, disk clean up is still a manual task,
though, I suppose that you can automate it by setting it as a scheduled task
once a week, or so, but again, you can always set Internet Explorer to empty
temporary internet files automatically once you finish browsing. That has
always been in the Internet Explorer settings, but in terms of emptying out
your recycle bin, or cleaning up dump files and/or log files, those you must
do manually, since the computer can never know which ones you want to delete
and which ones you don't.

Like I said above though, I may be incorrect in this statement, to please
take it with a grain of salt, as I am not officially using Windows 10 yet,
as it has not been reported ready for my computer.

Good luck.

My old XP just went to Gomer the Guru.

I understand that in 10 we do not have to do defrag or disk clean up? Is
that correct?I do not have a solid state hard drive, just a great big one, 1
tb.

Carolyn

Hi Dave,

There actually used to be a cheat sheet located in the advanced tab of the
system properties in Windows XP, but alas, they've done away with it, and I
don't know where to obtain it anymore.

This command was part of the list of commands that included the IP release
and renew commands for your internet, the check disk and disk defrag and
other useful utilities that were, and still are, as you can see, useful back
in the day.

In any case, perhaps someone with an XP computer can pull up the system
properties with Windows key+pause, then control Tab to the advanced tab, or,
at least, that's what I think it was called, and copy those commands down
for us.

Unfortunately, all of my computers are Windows 7 and up. LOL.

Very Cool! Had no idea this dialog existed, much less how to find it. Is
there a cheat sheet somewhere giving these specific control commands and
what they access?

Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box, then, in the run
edit field, type in "control userpasswords2", without the quotes, and press
enter.

In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says, users must type a
password to use this computer, and make sure it's unchecked.

Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar.

You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the default user and to
enter the password associated with that user.

Once you select and type in the default username and password, tab to the ok
button, and press the spacebar.

At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box, if it's still
open, or unless you want to make more advanced modifications in one of the
other tabs, and from that point onwards, it should boot directly into the
desktop.

Keep in mind that if you have User Control turned on, it will prompt you to
press the yes button if you want to allow the action.

Good luck.

Kimsan,

Good idea, but that would still present the logon screen -- It would just
need the Enter keypress to go past it.

In 8.1 it use to be in the navigation pain in the start menu properties
which after just looking now, it's not there; however, what if you simply
remove the password from the log on screen, unless you have others using
your machine...
