maybe a second dictionary just for abbreviations? but what if there's an abbreviation that you don't want the facility to interpret. how would it be handled, maybe with an exclusion rule?
I do believe the Kurzweil 1K has such a facility, but sometimes a passage has an abbreviation that is not what it is commonly associated with. for example, when ever WA is encountered, K1K says Washington, but I don't want that.
