There have been several answers to this issue on this list which tells me there are different avenues to take to perform this task. But for me an office 2013 user the best answer for me was to open the document, hit the f6 key,

where you will hear something about the dangers of opening protective emails
from the internet,, and then just tab once and hit enter and now you can edit
the document.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] protected documents help

Good morning!

I am running Microsoft Office 2013, Jaws 17 & Windows 8.1. When I download
documents, it is in protective view. I have gotten the message that it is in
protected view because it has been downloaded from the internet. Since it
is in this view, I have problems reading it with Jaws. How do I change
this so I can read these documents? Thanks so much for any information!
