Actually, it's not hair-splitting. In the past, there have been issues that 
only popped up when JAWS was running from the System Tray (or, as you say, 
as a service). Some of them have been pretty obscure, but they've definitely 
been there and when you report a JAWS problem, FS will want to know if 
you're running JAWS as a service or not.

Running JAWS as an application only means that you do not have it run from
the system tray.  Personally, I believe this to be a bit of "splitting
hairs" as I've never noticed any appreciable difference in actual
performance between having the "Run JAWS from System Tray" checkbox enabled
or disabled.  But if you go into the Task Manager you will find that running
JAWS from the System Tray places in the "Processes" tab whereas having JAWS
run as an "application" will have the program listed in the Task Manager's
Application tab.
