Gina,

Why don't you bring up a SQL*PLUS window and try it yourself instead of
quoting Oracle manuals.  My own experiments with SQL*PLUS and jdbc DO NOT
verify your claims.  BTW, I'm on Oracle 8.1.7.  Maybe older versions work
differently.
