That doesn't appear to be the case with jBoss. The actual exception I get at
the client is a java.rmi.ServerException, if I get the detail
on that I get a RemoteException, but it has no detail ie no embedded
SecurityException.

A RemoteException has a nested exception which should be the true exception
in this case. You should be able to see the SecurityException by accessing
RemoteException.detail. If this is not set to the SecurityException it
should be.
