I have unzipped the jboss2.2.1&tomcat3.2.1 on linux.
The similar problem was there, for some directories locked, such as jboss/bd/jbossmq, 
tomcat/log.
After I "chmod" all the directoris, it came to be OK.

Does the dir disappear from other distributions - or just the jboss-jetty one.

If it's just me, I'll fix my build to insert a dummy file.

If it's everyone, we should check in a dummy file, or fix the jboss build to insert 
one.

Yes - they are all identical, you just choose the archive type you prefer (AFAIK)
