One other thought, you say that "the remove method is supposed to remove it from the eviction queue". When I call remove("/"), are all child elements of that node also being removed from the eviction queue? And the children's children at all levels of the subtree? Maybe what is happening is that only the root element is being removed from the eviction queue but not the descendants?
