You need JDK 1.2 only if you plan to use JDEbug, the JDE's new JPDA-based
debugger.

You can install the JDE anywhere as long as you keep the JDE in its own
directory and preserve the JDE distribution's directory structure. Several
JDE functions assume that directory structure.

You should use the version of speedbar that comes with Emacs 20.4. Speedbar
is now an official part of Emacs. I no longer include it in the JDE
distribution.
