Highlighting in Local Variables window

The local variables window can look a bit scary when you've got a
few variables, so I tried changing the buffer from fundamental-mode
to java-mode (or jde-mode) so to add highlighting
- which does look quite nice and colourful (and a lot less scary!) -
BUT expanding and collapsing of variables no longer works.

Basically, does anyone know how to just add the java highlighting to
this buffer and leave it working as it should.
