Your problem is exactly the same as everybody else's, namely, the Windows
version of XEmacs does not know how to launch Windows subprocesses
correctly. The subject has been discussed ad nauseum on the JDE mailing
list over the last two years. I wonder how you could have missed it in your
search of the archives. You can work around the problem by using java to
launch windowless processes, e.g., the beanshell, and javaw, to launch
windowed processes. However, good luck, if you have a windowed process that
also writes to standard out: you can have the window or the standard out,
but not both. My advice, as always, is to use Emacs on Windows unless you
enjoy beating your head against a wall. As always, too, my standard
disclaimer: I have nothing against the Unix version of XEmacs.
