Another option, although not as powerful as registers, is to use the
set-mark-command (usually C-SPC) and return to the mark with
exchange-point-and-mark (C-x C-x). Remember that certain commands, s.a.
beginning-of-buffer (home), will set the mark themselves. By the way,
prefixing beginning-of-buffer with a number between 0 and 10 can be quite
useful too (i.e. [M-5 home] will move the cursor and mark to the middle of
the buffer).
