Yes... I think that just keeping the variables around won't work.

I would assume that this would ONLY happen if you have loaded the servlet.

Hm.  I don't know how the VM would handle a confirmed breakpoint when running
different classloaders.  The Tomcat classloader in V4.01 is very complicated.  I
don't know if the JPDA would take this into consideration.
