A localhost jabberd takes care of two other things:
messages between the user and the foreign IM system will be delivered 
*faster* than they are now.
passwords for foreign IM systems will be stored on the end user's 
machine where they belong, so it's more *secure*.

No, it won't work on cell phones (not for a few years anway).   Tough 
break.  It doesn't stop you from using transports on other servers.
