Greg, thanks for the response. Yes, we are using a Unix environment. I heard that the xvfb could cause some loss of resolution when generating the image - not sure if it is true, though. Actually, I am trying to find out if the pdf library (iText, for example) will need a display or not for generating the pdf.

I assume you are talking about a Unix environment here? We use xvfb (virtual frame buffer for X11) to generate gifs and jpegs on our servers but we haven't use it for PDFs yet but it should work.
