On my cable connection at home, I have a little cheapo 4-port Netgear
router/NAT/Firewall thingy that can automatically login to the provider's
PPOE login, AND it can apparently also send some data to dyndns.org to tell
it what IP number it got, which then apparently will automatically appear in
the DNS hosted by dyndns.

However I have also noted that the IP number I get is pretty stable, i.e. it
has only changed once when the provider changed the whole subnet they where
handing out.

Still it looks like a good idea and I am going to explore it soon.

The 'FTP a file to the static server' idea has a main failing I can think
of;

- if it's just a redirect, then if you type like
http://www.domain.com/somefile and it just redirects you to
http://192.168.0.1/somefile (ignoring the actual prive network number I used
ans assume it's a reachable one) then when the reader bookmarks it and you
change IP their bookmark would stop working.

- you'd have to use the stable server to 'tunnel' or 'proxy' (not sure what
the correct term is) to your machine so that all the urls look like they
come from http://www.domain.com, like the way that those come.to and go.to
domains work ... so your remote machine would still take all the traffic
hits. Maybe the free website company will already do this for you, but
you're still reliant on how fast that machine and it's pipe is so you
basically might as well use it anyway.
