I guess I'll include my vote. I like Source Insight http://www.sourceinsight.com/ (free
trial). I often switch between code branches and that requires me to close and
reopen my editor so I need something that loads fast (just timed at 4 seconds on
a 733Mhz/512MB). If is very configurable so there isn't much that I miss from a
more fully featured IDE.
BTW, what other types of programs/things do people use to help with
programming? For example here is what I use:
* Mozilla for Javadocs, test code, etc.
* http://www.shortkeys.com/ (free lite
version) for common code fragments
* Hotkeys galore (WinNT and Source Insight) for building, dev
deployment, common programs, and common directories (I have it setup
so I rarely have to even use the start menu.
* Dual monitors so I can see more code and see code and
testing/javadoc/email/tkcvs/etc.
* Archos 20GB MP3 player (IT won't allow MP3 files on my computer
for legal reasons) for the right mood.
* Quiet work area (one benefit of downsizing is there there are
only 5 people in a room with 25 cubes).
* VNC http://www.realvnc.com/ for connecting
to other developer's machines, my home machine (from work), my work machine
(from home - I telecommute some), etc
* Trillan http://www.trillian.cc/ for instant
messaging with co-workers
* Outlook (Corp. standard)

The best text editor I have found is Crimson Editor http://www.crimsoneditor.com/ It is small, fast, and free. It has syntax highlighting for over 50 languages. Key stroke recorder for macros. You can setup up hot keys to compile, then execute, the code your working on. It even has an output window built in. It has a bunch of other features built in. I tried a lot of editors before I found this one.
