absolutely, I keep a link to the API docs on my desktop..

similar docs are available for most if not all the non-core packages.
 
save the $ print the doc ?

I would never purchase the API for J2SE.  Sun offers it as a download from their site.  You can load it on you PC then access it from there.  I found this a great way to use it and make sure you have the up-to-date version.  You can even annotate it with your personal comments.
