I did the same with a C based workstation project about 7 years ago and got access to the Complete SunOS 4.x API - at that time realized in C - so that I didn't have to buy kilograms of books/papers.

If you really like the book - buy it ( In the past I did the same with "Kernighan&Ritchie" with a lot of examples and haven't regret it by now )
