[jds-review] gdesklets-extra patch for review

I'm confused (which is not difficult considering that I don't know
how gdesklets work).  This desklet can monitor network devices,
so it must have some hooks somewhere in order to get the information
it displays?  Can you not use the same technique for finding the
name of a network interface?
