In the end, I adopted fuseki, and after some tinkering the my config.ttl file, inserting into named graphs worked fine. I'm guessing from Paolo Castagna's suggestion to do this, that joseki has been deprecated in favour of fuseki.. I was initially using joseki primarily so that I could get a degree of owl reasoning using TrOWL, which has a tutorial for plugging into joseki, but not fuseki [1].
