I was playing about at the place that I store my cars, and saw some really
bizarre 1960s military vehicles.
They are made by Audi and are called Mungas. They resemble small jeeps, and
are powered by a 900 cc. water cooled 3 cylinder engine with one distributor,
containing 3 sets of points, powered by 3 coils.
It is a 2 stroke that runs to about 10,000 rpm, sounds like a coffee perc at
low rpm and rises to a penetrating buzz at high rpm. It has a roller bearing
crank, and runs a total loss oiling system - the lubrication is in the fuel,
and results in a mosquito-killing haze whenever it is run.
I am told that it has sufficient power to keep up with modern stuff quite
well, and I am told that 'Munga' stands for something much longer and
incomprehensible to non-German speakers.
Weird and wonderful - has anyone ever seen these beasts (I never had). Make
an interesting entry at an Audi club (if such exist) event!
