I have done this operation on 2 Honda Civic and Grand Am (twice )If your
manual says there is nothing left to hold it in ,I would suggest that you
use a heavy pry bar braced against some handy available suspension piece. On
both the Honda & the Grand Ams I had the same problem ,the Factory installed
shafts were very difficult to remove .With a 36 " crowbar and some wooden
blocks you should have some luck
BTW is the stuck shaft on the passengers side ? Both of mine were the
passenger side .
I have ended up replacing these shafts at about 180.000 kilo  the second
time around is a lot easier
