Try the wonderful book:

"Artificial Intelligence -- A Modern Approach"
S. Russell and P. Norvig, 1995, Prentice Hall
ISBN: 0-13-103805-2

A brilliantly written book which is totally `agent centered'
for building rule based and learning systems. I have used it
for a grad course -- had some pretty good comments from students.

And if you `really' want to know about agents, try the collection
of papers:

"Software Agents"
Ed (Jefferey Bradshaw)
MIT Press
ISBN: 0262522349

hope these are useful.

regards
Omer
