Hi Graham,
I've recently seen a demo of ILOG JRules product, a commercial software that
is competing Jess as a RETE implementation.
I wasn't very much impressed, but my bosses were : what they bring as
"business value" is a mapping of rules to natural language. Talking with the
guys made it all clear how easy it is to do it : use reflection to map rule
operators to java functions implemented by the objects.
ILOG has the advantage of "first on the market" ... but a nice Jess add-in
implementation can very well do it ! Anybody wanna try ?
Another thing that came out of that meeting : their effort to push their
implementation as a standard for the Java Rule Engine API JSR 00094 (see
http://java.sun.com/aboutJava/communityprocess/jsr/jsr_094_ruleengine.html).
Another proof that big vendors try to take on the market using SUN's JCP
program.
I'll stick with Jess, thank you !
