JUBA, 16th August, 2011 [Gurtong] - South Sudan National Assembly
Speaker Hon. James Wani Igga has warned Members of Parliaments (MPs)
to keep their firearms away before entering into parliament premises
during sessions.

Speaking before hundreds of MPs who convened for the second opening of
the National Assembly since the House opened last week; Hon. Wani said
the small firearms pose threats in parliament during proceedings.

“Let us please make sure that we don’t come here with weapons. It
makes us uncomfortable,” Hon. Wani urged the parliamentarians. “We are
also going to introduce security instruments,” he added.

Meanwhile, speaking in an exclusive interview with Gurtong media, the
Parliament Deputy Speaker Hon. Joseph Wol claimed that, many
parliamentarians have been spotted by the Parliamentary Security
Committee of entering into sessions with their firearms hence creating
panic in the House.

“What we are trying to do is simply to regulate this practice.
Legislatures are safe within the August house so there is no need of
making other members uncomfortable,” Hon. Joseph said.

Yesterday’s warning over firearms possession in parliament with
Government Ministers in-attendance is the first of its kind compared
to the last Assembly of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly, SSLA
that had no major restrictions.

This directive comes as a measure by the speaker to ensure effective
security in the new Republic of South Sudan’s Parliaments.

Last week on Monday, during the opening of the National parliament Hon
Wani affirmed that, “We will not be able to do anything in our new,
dear, Nation unless we thoroughly and comprehensively improve
security.”
