South Sudan Converts 1.8 Billion Sudanese Pounds
South Sudan has now converted 1.771 billion of its old Sudanese Pounds
to the new currency of South Sudanese Pounds; the Care Taker Minister
of Information Hon. Marial Benjamin revealed on Friday in Juba.

JUBA, 21st August 2011 [Gurtong] - South Sudan has now converted 1.771
billion of its old Sudanese Pounds to the new  South Sudanese Pounds;
the Care Taker Minister of Information Hon. Marial Benjamin revealed
on Friday in Juba.

While commending a smooth conversion of the currency, Marial who
addressed the press shortly after the weekly meeting of the government
Council of Minister said that, the Governor of the Central Bank,
Kornelio Koriom presented a report on the currency conversion process.

He urged South Sudanese to be prompt in converting the remaining
pounds as soon as possible before the September 9, 2011 deadline.

However, despite the Minister’s commendation on the conversion, many
Counties in the new Republic are still behind in exchanging of the
currency as they lack banking services to facilitate the process.

During the release of the South Sudan Pounds, the former Governor of
the Central Bank, Elijah Malok said that, two billion of the old
Sudanese Pounds was in circulation in the country that may need to be
converted before September, a move to prevent the country from
realizing acute inflation.

Meanwhile, the Information Minister disclosed that during the GOSS
Council of the Ministers sitting on Friday, chaired by the Vice
President, Dr Riek Machar, the council approved five million South
Sudanese Pounds to the Juba Council Mayor.

“The money was allocated by the national government to the Juba City
Council under the Mayor, Mr. Mohamed Al Haj Babballa in appreciation
of the good work done with his team during and after the South Sudan
Independence celebrations,” said Marial.

He said the money was allocated to support the Juba Council’s effort
“to keep Juba clean and green.”

Marial said the Council has urged the Mayor to exert efforts as the
South Sudan government strategizes to improve the standards of Juba
city as the national capital.
