RUMBEK, 20th August, 2011 [Gurtong] - Various Women Associations in
Lakes State are currently in a three days working expected to end
today. The workshop brought together all civil society women groups to
discuss women participation in governance, contribution in decision
making and cooperation among themselves.

The workshop held at Bros and Company hotel under the theme “Women can
do it” was organized by a Non Governmental Organization called
Generation Agency for Development & Transformation (GADET),

According to GADET Executive Director Taban Christopher, all Lakes
State women associations were allowed to participate in the
empowerment workshop.

Christopher said that, “Today is a very important day from all women
in the State – the workshop is particularly focusing at women’s
participation in decision making process and how to communicate.”

Another facilitator Obasi Cecilia Tito said that, “The aim here is to
empower women with various skills in order to take an active role in
the development of the newest nation of the Republic of South Sudan.”

Cecilia also pointed out that the new nation should be developed based
on these skills both politically, socially and economically. She added
that women have a lot to learn from each other in areas of leadership,
communication, and networking skills, to strengthen teamwork and
improve on public speaking.

The facilitator noted that, “Of course ‘Women can do it’ will have
some tools and a number of topics to cover.

In Lakes State, just as the rest of South Sudan, has experienced
gender based violence as well as forced marriage practices occurring
across the 8 Counties.

In Rumbek alone most women have no say in decision making process.
