The project is being carryout by Chinese Engineering Department within UNMISS with an aim to help the State government for cleaning the government secretariat compound by clearing trees and levelling the grounds to give it a modern facelift. Speaking to the press in her office yesterday, the Lakes State UNMISS Coordinator Ms. Renuka Chidambaram said that UMISS will double efforts to cooperate with the State government and its citizens so that developmental activities are achieved in the State without conditions. Chidambaram said that, “as you know UNMISS is here to support and assist the government in its developmental and peace reconciliation efforts – as part of these effort, we have a program called ‘winning the heart and the mind of the people.’ Usually the UN peacekeepers under the civilian-military cooperation give voluntarily their time, energy and resources to assist in other ways apart from the main mission.” The Lakes State secretariat general official has welcomed the efforts made by UNMISS. “We will work side by side with our brothers and sisters in the Government of South Sudan to help in building the nation. “Despite the challenges in Lakes State, most people have changed their attitude towards developing their State – they are willing to work even though life is difficult in the street for commoners,” Ms. Chidambaram said. Lakes State government has deployed 60,000 SPLA soldiers to carryout disarmament exercise across the Lakes State’s 8 Counties. The State has been unstable since the beginning of the 2005 Peace deal due to cattle raids and robbery on main roads. The Lakes State Governor Hon. Tong has since appealed to the South Sudan government for assistance in police and judicial reforms. However, the request is long overdue.
