TORIT, 5th September 2011 [Gurtong] – The Eastern Equatoria State
Legislative Assembly (EESLA) Chief Whip, Hon. Tobiolo Alberio Oromo
has criticized the absence of South Sudanese coins and appealed to the
Central Bank of South Sudan to promptly introduce or circulate so that
people are able to buy small commodities.

Honourable Tobiolo’s concerns were echoed by the public as they remain
sceptic over the delay despite the promise by the Central Bank’s
Governor Cornelio Koryom Mayik.

Late last week media outlets across the country quoted the CBSS’
Governor Koryom announcing that SSP coins would be in circulation this
month.

South Sudanese preferred the minted coins to be called ‘piastress’,
they also recommended its denomination to range between 1 - 50
piastresses while urging the central Bank to Mint and distribute as
many coins as possible for circulation in the country.

“Our people especially the peasants are likely to be in trouble as
they have meagre income to buy commodities in the market. We need to
consider the poor as well,” Tobiolo Alberio said.

He said that if the move is effected, it would help meeting the public demands.

The Chief Whip also described the legal tender notes already in
circulation as ‘crisp and nice looking,’ the public appreciates all
the different notes’ security features and layout, but questions the
10 and 100 notes for bearing similarity in look and recommends the two
notes to have different features; something unique looking preferably
dazzling carroty in yellow with a special security threading.

The South Sudanese Banknotes [pounds] denominations currently in
circulation are 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 while all piastres which will be
in coin form are expected to be 1, 5, 25, 50 coins, Bank officials
have confirmed to Gurtong.
