JUBA, 20th September 2011[Gurtong] - The ministerial committee
appointed by President Salva Kiir to work on the relocation of the
Country’s capital have reported that local residents of Ramciel in
Lakes State have agreed to allocate 50 square kilometres (sq Km) land
for the construction of the new capital.

Hon. Jema Nunu Kumba, who headed the ministerial committee team to
survey the area in Ramciel early this week, told the press in Juba
that, “the purpose of the visit was to familiarize ourselves with the
proposed place and also to meet the local communities.”

Nunu who is also the South Sudan’s Minister of Housing and
Infrastructure said that, communities in Ramciel warmly welcomed the
new capital there since it meant extension of services to them. “We
are going to send a technical team to the ground to survey the area
which will be around 50 sq km for demarcation.” Nanu added.

Controversy
The housing minister was asked whether the land was officially handed
over to the ministerial committee. Hon. Nunu responded that the
natives there had assured the government that they would provide the
land for free.

She clarified that, President Salva Kiir had issued directives and
that the appointed committee should intensify plans for the relocation
of the capital. Nunu added that, “we are going to engage a consultant
to survey and do mapping of the proposed area as soon as possible.”

Two weeks ago, the government of South Sudan decided to relocate the
capital from Juba after reports that, the 5 sq km land allocated by
the Central Equatoria State authorities was small to develop the
country’s new capital.

In a survey carried out by Gurtong last week in Juba, there were mixed
reactions on the relocation of the capital from Juba as others
proposed conducting a referendum on the council of minister’s
decision.

Gurtong has also learnt from reliable sources that, some natives in
Ramciel have started claiming land ownership within the proposed area
for the new capital.
