vicious cycle of violence and to embrace peaceful-co-existence. Machar
spoke during the commemoration of the World Peace Day convened at
Nyakuron cultural centre in Juba.

Taking place for the first time in the Republic of South Sudan, the
commemoration was characterized with several speeches advocating for
peaceful re-construction of the new fledgling nation of South Sudan.

The commemoration is also coinciding with the UN General meeting
currently underway in New York. The occasion’s focal persons were
drawn from different institutions; government, civil society, the UN,
African Union and school children mostly youths.

This year’s theme for celebration was, “make your voice heard,” the
function was organized by the United Mission in South Sudan in
partnership with Pact Sudan and United Kingdom Aid for International
Development, UKaid.

Among the key speakers were the Chairperson of the South Sudan Peace
Commission, Peter Gwang, the AU Ambassador-Nakaha Stanyslas and the
South Sudan Vice President, Dr Riek Machar.

In his key remarks to the public, ambassador Nakaha urged for peaceful
co-existence between South and North Sudan, forging peaceful and
diplomatic completion of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace
Agreement, (CPA).

He also urged for rebels who are fire arms against the South Sudan
government to cooperate to the amnesty granted by President Kiir
during the proclamation of the country’s long-yearned independence.

He added that, “I would like to appeal to the various rebel leaders
who have not yet joined the system to come and openly engage in a
negotiated settlement of whatever grievances they may have instead of
shedding the blood of their innocent brothers.”

The Republic of South Sudan (RSS) Vice President Dr. Riek Machar who
was also the guest of honour said that the commemoration of the World
Peace day was significant in the new Republic while re-counting the
long gone decades they yearned for peace.
