JUBA, 28th September 2011 – During their sitting no. 14/2011 on Monday
chaired by Deputy Speaker Daniel Awet Akot, South Sudan National
Legislative Assembly confirmed 4 judges of the judiciary and the chief
justice of Supreme Court of South Sudan without objection, after
appointment by the President last week.

Before the discussion, Akot urged members of the August house to look
into their curriculum vitae properly. These judges include: Justice
Bullen Panchol Awal, Benjamin Baak Deng, Mohamed Ismail Said and John
Gatewech Lul Wur.

Mr. Maker Thian a member of Parliament (MP) from Jonglei State asked
members of the august house about the appointment saying, “I would
like to know whether there was a recommendation from the South Sudan
Judiciary Service Commission or not? Two, according to the National
Transitional Constitution which says that the Supreme Court shall
consist of nine members, now where are the rest?”

In response, the Minister of Justice John Luk Jok explained that the
South Sudan Service Commission has been consulted by the President
already. He cited that according to the article 133 of the
Transitional Constitution which stated that “Judges shall have the
following requirements to validate their appointment; 1) credibility
2) neutrality of the person politically. 3) Personal integrity. 4)
Qualifications. 5) Work experience in the legal field.

John Luk proceeded to read their credentials to the house one after
another carefully and asked the members of august house to confirm
these four members of Supreme Court.

Majok Dut Muorwel of SPLM from Warrap State immediately seconded the
confirmation of the four members to the Supreme Court with
exclamation. Muorwel said that these four judges had strongly opposed
the legal tactics used by Arabs to constraint the Independence of
South Sudan during and after referendum. Therefore, he said “these are
well qualified, competent judges who will serve this new nation with
integrity and honesty.”

Deputy Speaker Akot urged all the members of august house to prepare
for the bills which were tabled last week by the Minister of Justice
because “it is your obligation to make good bills in this house.” The
bills include Weight and Measures, Consumer Protection, Export and
Import and National Bureau of Standard.

Salva Kiir Mayardit is yet to appoint other five judges since the
Supreme Court is made of nine judges.
