JUBA, 28th September 2011 [Gurtong] - Joint Donor Team, a group of six
donors with a shared vision of supporting the fledgling nation of
Republic of South Sudan have vowed to prolong their supportive
development strategies into longer terms.

Honor Flanagan, the new head of the Donor Team in Juba after taking
over office from her predecessor, Michael Elmquist said that, the new
country still needs much support in provision of basic necessities.

She also articulated that, building the new nation is a priority and
big responsibility to them. The current situations in which the
government of South Sudan needs to focus on will also be a key
responsibility of the team.

“We are looking at what is happening now and we need to move towards
long term development goals,” Honor said.

While speaking as the new head of the donor team, Honor said her terms
of reference in office will be focused on ensuring ‘work is done’ but
not spending a lot of time in meetings. “This time round we need to
make sure that the things we do are well coordinated. Not spending
time in meetings but doing work,” she told Gurtong at the Joint Donor
Team office in Juba.

“This time round we will also be focused on accountability. We are
trying to capacity build the new civil society to have a voice on
issues like corruption,” she added.

The Joint Donor Team is a group of six countries established in 2006
first by four; Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom
later to be joined by Denmark and Canada.

Honor said the Team will also maintain support on the three main areas
of; public sector and capacity building, economic growth and aid
effectiveness, and providing capacity building to the civil society.
