Run tload on the server
Let it run for about 5 minutes.
Then copy / paste the output (whole screen) to an email and this will give
us some kind of idea as to your systems load.

Then the only thing I could imagine is load on the server is causing
problems 
with rrdtool, or that you have disk problems (unlikely).
