I think the problem is people looked at your problem and decided it was completely due to the fact you have a dodgy email client that doesn't follow any sort of standard. Plain ASCII works for most email clients, I'm amazed it didn't work for yours. Seriously, encoding text into base64 and then wrapping mime headers around it, so you can see text you started with, just sounds wrong.
