Judith, In order to reply to an open message try alt H then R then P. That should place your cursor in the field where you can begin typing your reply.
In order to check your settings. Press alt. Use the left and right arrows to reach the file tab. Active this tab by pressing the spacebar. Arrow up until you reach options then press enter. This will place you in a list of categories which contain your settings for various mail functions along with some other things you may not care about at this point. Once you find the category you want to explore, use the tab key to go through the settings for that category. If you need more help let me know. I'm using Outlook 2013, but I don't think the two versions are all that different.
