Does Malware Bytes run in real-time in the background if you are running
just the free version? I checked around but found no options other than
the manual scan.

That is all very well and good, as long as the updated software is
accessible. No point downloading and installing software, if, as a person
who cannot see enough to read the screen, you cannot use it, now is there!

Why inhibit software updates? They come out with new versions because the
old one can't deal with the newest threats. It's a very good idea to
install all available updates as soon as they're released.
