Try the left-mouse button, just to the right of the numlock key. If that doesn't work, I sometimes find that alt-n doesn't appear to work when, in reality, the problem is that JAWS isn't navigating as I'd expect. So then, after pressing alt-n, I try left and right arrow keys in lieu of tabs, and vice-versa.
