When I had this suddenly start happening in Windows 7, which might be
different, I found that when positioned on the file name, hitting the right
click or applications key, showed "preview" as the first choice, and thus
your hitting the enter key invoked preview. Instead, cursor down, and
"open" will be probably the next item or just below that. Hit enter to
open. This seems to re-set the applications key list, with "open" becoming
the first item. After that, hitting the enter key will open.

Ann, I wonder if you can close this preview pane by pressing F6, then
control-space, then arrowing down to "Close" and pressing enter.

Subject: Opening a Word document
Windows 8.1, Word 2013,, JAWS 15 and 16.
When I press enter on a document I get a blank page, and JAWS says
preview pane; shell preview pane; something extension. Reading it
with the JAWS cursor gives me
file, share, view, Document 22 (or 98, or 36, or something else irrelevant).
No text. Alt does not put me on the ribbon. Usually I use alt-space
bar to get a menu, and arrow down to close. sometimes reopening
gives me the document. Insert-escape doesn't do anything.
Is there an item somewhere that JAWS isn't seeing and I need to click???
thanks,
