Actually his ideas do work and if anything might be on the low side.
Check out the original price of a new copy of NT. They include the upgrades
in the
original purchase price, whether you know how to get them or not. Remember
also that these are mostly bug fixes. When they have a new product, you
pay full price for it.
When you bought your new computers, that copy of Windows didn't come free,
it was added into the purchase price of your computer.
Lotus dropped the protection scheme when it moved to CDs. At the time most
people didn't have the ability to write their own CDs. Now as more people
are getting these devices, you can probably look for newer methods to
protect their ownership of the software.

As many in this list might remember, I've vented my spleen at H-J in the
past when I thought they did wrong, but this isn't one of them.
