Hello to all,
I have slowed down speech for all of my help files by creating specific
synthesizer settingsfor Winhlp32.exe. Here is how it is done.
Laying the ground work
1. Open Notepad and press Alt+F followed by O to open the Open dialog box.
2. In the file named field, type C:\jfw32\jfw.ini and press enter.
3. Read this file to learn the short names for your particular
synthesizer(s).
4. Close and re-open Notepad and re-open the Open dialog box.
5. In the file named field, type C:\jfw32\settings\enu\default.jcf and
press enter.
6. Press Alt+S followed by enter to open the find dialog box.
7. In the find what field, type the short name for your primary
synthesizer, then press enter.
8. When JFW says your synth's short name, press escape to close the Find
dialog box.
9. Use the Say Line command to confirm that JFW has placed you on a line
that says the synth's short name followed by GlobalContext. There is an
exception to this, however. If you choose Eloquence, the first line for
that section is Eloq followed by ErrorContext. I do not understand the lack
of uniformity.
Special note: You are in an area of the Difault.jcf file that contains
settings for Global, error, keyboard, screen, PC Cursor, and JAWS Cursor
voices for your synthesizer. These settings are speed, pitch, volume,
punctuation, upper case, parent, voice name, and language.
10. You will begin selecting text at this point. You may safely press
Shift+Pagedown once to quickly select the first portion of the text. After
that you will need to select the text line by line until you have reached
the language setting for the JAWS Cursor.
11. Press Control+C to copy the text to the clipboard.
12. If you are going to use only one synthesizer with the application in
mind, close the default file. If you want to add another synthesizer,
minimize the file.
13. Open Notepad again and paste the selected text from the default file
into it.
14. If this is as far as you need to go, save and close the file. If you
have more information to add, save and minimize this file. Return to the
Default file, press control+Home, and repeat steps six through fourteen as
many times as needed.
Note: If you have two or more synthesizers, but you provide settings for
only one in the new JCF file, JFW will resort to the default settings if you
access the application with any other synthesizer.
You need one other piece of information before continuing. it is the name
of the jcf file for the application whose synth settings you wish to alter.
To learn this, follow these steps.
1. Open the program to which the changes are to be applied.
2. Press Insert+Q. If you hear something like, "WPWin8 settings are
loaded, the application currently being used is WpWin8.exe." You will be
interested in WPWin8.jcf. If JFW informs you that default settings are
loaded, a JCF file will need to be created. This is simple to do.
3. Press Insert+#6 to open the Configuration Manager.
4. Make a change to a default setting. (I generally change Graphics
verbosity from say all to say labeled.)
5. Save the file, close the Configuration Manager, and close the
application.
Now all of the initial work has been done. I realize this seems a bit
lengthy, but I am pleased with the results.
Creating the new synth settings
Note: I have chosen the following method for performing this task, because
it allows me to keep a copy of my original settings saved in a text file
which can be accessed quickly should I ever want to add synth settings to
any other application.
1. Open Notepad.
2. Open the synth settings file you created.
3. Press Alt+E followed by A to select the contents of the file.
4. Press Control+C to copy to the clipboard.
5. Close and re-open Notepad.
6. Open the JCF file you want to modify.
7. Press Control+End to move to the end of the file. Confirm that you are
on a blank line.
8. Press Control+V to paste the synth settings information into this file.
9. You can now edit any of the settings by changing the information
following equals.
One note of caution. You need to be aware of the minimum and maximum number
allowed for incremental settings.
10. When the changes have been made, close the file and save the changes.
I hope this information is of some benefit to someone.
