I went through all the settings in the display section of control panel to
try to eliminate anything at all nonstandard. I confirmed that the common
culprits were not the cause, including the number of colors, the screen
resolution, and the wallpaper setting -- all were plain vanilla standard.
In the appearance tab, however, I discovered that the desktop was set to
"Windows standard (extra large)" or something like that. I changed it to
"Windows standard" without the "extra large" and my desktop reading problems
seemed to be solved. I also changed any other controls in that combo box to
"Windows standard" (I think one or two others said "large" or "extra
large").
I don't know how my settings got that way. Either they were the default
when my consultant recently installed Windows 95 or he changed the default
to the larger standard thinking that it would benefit me (it actually did
not because my residual vision cannot read print on the screen).
Dr. JAWS did not report that the larger standard was a problem, so perhaps
it needs to be updated to flag such settings and change them to what is
optimum.
